  • A value must be approved by three different AI models that agree, not by one confidence score.
  • Your documents come in many languages and formats, including handwriting.
  • You need a maintained review screen, and documents must stay on your own servers.

Choose Google Document AI if

  • Your documents are mostly in English, and you want generative extraction with few training samples.

Decision & confidence
Three AI models must agree before approval Yes

Three models from different families read the same content. A value is approved only when all three agree and no rule check fails.

Not published

The generative custom extractor runs on Google's own LLM versions, selected by processor version (several in Preview). A rule that different model families must agree is not described.

Confidence model Yes

Four separate checks per value: can it be read, was it read right, do the other model families agree, do the rules pass. Never blended into one number.

A confidence score from 0 to 1 per extracted entity. You can use low scores to send entities to manual review.

Three differences that matter

  1. 01

    Generative reading beyond English

Google's languages page lists many languages for OCR and the custom extractor. For generative extraction, Google officially supports only English. Documind reads many languages, including handwriting and accented letters. Tax ID, IBAN and HS code checks are built in.

“Only the English language is officially supported.”

  2. 02

Three different AI models must agree

Google's generative custom extractor runs on Google's own LLM versions. It gives one confidence score per entity, from 0 to 1. A rule that different model families must agree is not described. In Documind, three AI models from different families read each value. A value is approved only when all three agree and no rule check fails.

  3. 03

A review screen that is part of the product

Google lists Human-in-the-Loop as deprecated since 16 January 2024. Deprecated features stay available for the period in its Terms of Service. Documind includes its own review screen. A person gets each open value by email, with the page, the other possible values and the reason.

Where Google Document AI is strong

  1. Strong, low-cost OCR

Enterprise Document OCR is $1.50 per 1,000 pages, or $0.60 above five million (USD list price). The first 1,000 pages are free, and its language list is long.

  2. Few samples for English documents

Google recommends the generative custom extractor as the first option for variable layouts. It needs about 0 to 50+ training documents.

  3. Page and position for each value

Entities can carry a page anchor with a bounding polygon and a text anchor. You can show the exact spot on the page.

  4. Rule checks, in Preview

Custom extractor validation rules use the CEL language, for example line items that must sum to the total. Rules can also be drafted from plain-language prompts.

  5. Wide compliance scope

Document AI is listed in scope for ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018, SOC 1, 2 and 3, and PCI DSS.

When to choose which

When to choose Google Document AI

Google Document AI is a strong platform for teams on Google Cloud. Its OCR is low cost and lists many languages. Its generative extractor needs few samples for English documents. It shows the page and position for each value. It offers an EU multi-region and a wide compliance scope. For English invoices, contracts or forms, Document AI is a good fit.

  • Your documents are mostly in English, and you want generative extraction with few training samples.
  • You run on Google Cloud and want results in Cloud Storage and BigQuery.
  • Processing in the eu multi-region meets your data policy.

When to choose Documind

Choose Documind when three different AI models must agree before a value is approved. Documind reads many languages, including handwriting. Tax ID, IBAN and HS code checks are built in, and a failed check blocks the value. Exceptions go to a person by email and to the built-in review screen, with the reason. Documind runs on your own servers, including air-gapped.

  • A value must be approved by three different AI models that agree, not by one confidence score.
  • Your documents come in many languages and formats, including handwriting.
  • You need a maintained review screen, and documents must stay on your own servers.

Document-type fit

Google's pretrained parsers focus on invoices, expenses, bank statements, pay slips and US identity documents. Bills of lading, packing lists, EUR.1, A.TR and customs declarations need a custom extractor. Its generative option is officially supported in English only. Documind reads the full customs packet, LC sets and e-invoices. It checks the documents against each other and checks local tax IDs and HS codes.
