Comparison

Documind vs Amazon Textract

Textract lists six languages, and its handwriting reading is English only. Documind reads many languages. Three AI models must agree, then it completes the work in your systems.

Tell us if something changed.

Choose Documind if

  • A value must be approved by three different AI models that agree, not by one confidence score.
  • Your documents come in many languages, including handwriting, and tax IDs, IBANs and HS codes must be checked.
  • You want a review screen and rule checks in the product, on your own servers.

Choose Amazon Textract if

  • You need raw OCR for English or Western European documents at very high volume and low unit cost.
  • Your stack already runs on AWS, and your engineers will build the workflow, the review step and the rules.
  • Cloud processing in an AWS region meets your data policy, with the AI services opt-out applied if you need it.

In short

  • Textract's text detection lists six languages. Its handwriting reading is English only.
  • Documind reads many languages, including handwriting. Three different AI models must agree before a value is auto-approved.
  • Both return each value with its page, the exact spot on the page and a confidence score.
  • Textract human review runs through Amazon A2I, and AWS says A2I is closed to new customers. Documind includes its own review screen for people.
  • For plain OCR, Textract costs $1.50 per 1,000 pages (US West Oregon list price, checked 12 October 2026).

Decision & confidence
Three model families must agree before auto-approve Yes

Three models from different families read the same content. A value is auto-approved only when all three agree and no rule check fails.

Not published

Textract returns a confidence score per block. It does not describe a multi-model check. A rule that different model families must agree is not described.

Confidence model Yes

Four separate checks per value: can it be read, was it read right, do the other models agree, do the rules pass. Never blended into one number.

A confidence score from 0 to 100 per block. It covers the recognized text and the accuracy of its location.

Three differences that matter

  1. 01

    Many languages, including handwriting

Textract lists six text-detection languages. Queries and handwriting are English only. Documind reads many languages, including handwriting, accented letters, local date formats and decimal commas. Tax ID, IBAN and HS code checks are built in.

    In Amazon Textract's words
“Amazon Textract supports English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish text detection.”

  2. 02

Three different AI models must agree

Textract returns a confidence score from 0 to 100 for each block. The docs we read do not describe a multi-model check. In Documind, three AI models from different families read each value. A value is auto-approved only when all three agree and no rule check fails. Otherwise a person decides, and sees the reason.

    Source (opens in new tab)
  3. 03

Review is part of the product

With Textract, human review runs through Amazon A2I. You build the flow definition, the worker task template and the work team. AWS now says A2I is closed to new customers. Documind includes the Review Queue and Review Workspace, with the reason each value needs a person.

    In Amazon Textract's words
“Amazon SageMaker A2I is no longer open to new customers.”

Where Amazon Textract is strong

  1. Low cost for plain OCR

Detect Document Text is $1.50 per 1,000 pages (US West Oregon list price). After one million pages a month, it is $0.60 per 1,000. For raw text at high volume, that is hard to beat.

  2. Page, position and confidence per block

Each block comes with its page, a bounding box, a polygon and a confidence score from 0 to 100.

  3. AWS scale and ecosystem

Textract runs in 15 AWS regions, four of them in Europe. It reads documents from Amazon S3 and connects to the rest of AWS.

  4. Broad AWS assurance

The FAQ calls Textract HIPAA eligible and lists PCI, ISO and SOC.

  5. Simple API, no ML skills needed

AWS says you need no machine learning expertise for the basic APIs. It publishes prebuilt APIs for invoices, receipts, US identity documents and mortgage packages.

  6. A newer generative service on AWS

AWS also offers Bedrock Data Automation. It uses generative AI and returns visual grounding and confidence scores.

When to choose which

When to choose Amazon Textract

Textract is a strong choice for reading text at scale inside AWS. It is cheap for plain OCR and scales to millions of pages. It returns the page, the position and a confidence score for each block. It runs in many AWS regions with broad AWS assurance. For English or other listed languages, Textract does its part well.

When to choose Documind

Choose Documind when you need the work done, not only text. Three different AI models must agree before a value is approved. Documind reads many languages, including handwriting. Tax ID, IBAN and HS code checks are built in, and a failed check blocks the value. Exceptions go to a built-in review screen, on your own servers.

  • A value must be approved by three different AI models that agree, not by one confidence score.
  • Your documents come in many languages, including handwriting, and tax IDs, IBANs and HS codes must be checked.
  • You want a review screen and rule checks in the product, on your own servers.

Document-type fit

Textract's prebuilt APIs cover invoices, receipts, US identity documents and mortgage packages. Bills of lading, packing lists, EUR.1, A.TR and customs declarations need the general Forms, Tables or Queries features. Handwriting is English only. Documind reads the full customs packet and checks the documents against each other.

How to switch

Keep Textract for raw OCR, use Documind for decisions

You do not have to replace Textract. Keep it for bulk text, and send documents that need a decision to Documind.

  1. STEP 1

    Connect your source

Point Documind at the same S3 bucket, SFTP folder or inbox. You can also send documents through the REST API.

  2. STEP 2

    Describe the decision

Describe the fields and the rules. The Workflow Generator drafts the schema, the prompt and the validation code for you to approve.

  3. STEP 3

    Run an evaluation set

Use documents you have already checked as ground truth. The report card shows the weakest fields before you go live.
